Professional Development - Workshops

Teacher Well Being and Self-Care

Teachers need opportunities to practice what encompasses "Social Emotional Learning" as it relates to adults and, take time from the rigors of teaching, to reflect on and deepen their own social, emotional, and cultural competencies. As part of this workshop, we will consider what it takes to strengthen resiliency for managing stress and improving well-being. We will review resources for regulating our emotions and tips to stay within your 'window of stress tolerance' through grounding strategies, mindfulness and daily well-being skills.  A personal survey to gain valuable insight in the areas of relationships, internal beliefs, initiative and self-control is shared to create your own action plan for strengthening your protective factors shown to support resilience.

Teachers will gain insight in:

  • Teacher Well Being in the Framework of SEL
  • What is Emotional Agility and How to Strengthen it for our own Wellbeing
  • How to Stay Within Your Window of Stress Tolerance
  • Protective Patterns, Centering Skills and Resiliency
  • Complete Your Own Resilience Survey and Action Plan
  • The Science of Well-Being

Beyond Go Noodle -  Understanding Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and How to Integrate SEL into Your Classroom Practices and Management Approach

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is a process for children and adults to acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.  This workshop will share evidence based practices to guide educators in implementing classroom based SEL initiatives that promote students’ social and emotional competencies.

  • An Overview of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Competencies and Activities for Teaching in each of the 5 SEL Domaines-
  • Key Educational  Management Practices that Cultivate Learning for Students Exposed to Trauma
  • SEL Essentials for Beginning the School Year
  • Lessons for teaching students throughout the Year

Trauma Informed Teaching and Shifts to Classroom Management That Build Resilience

This workshop is a summary of the key strategies and activities educators can utilize for building trauma informed, compassionate classrooms that promote resilience.  The key ideas presented come from Jennifer L. Bashant’s book, Building a Trauma-Informed Compassionate Classroom and Patricia Jennings book, The Trauma Sensitive Classroom, Building Resilience with Compassionate Teaching.

Essential ideas will include:

  • Overview of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s) and Trauma
  • Student Stress Response, Triggers and Self-Regulation Strategies
  • Compassionate Responses to Challenging Behavior from a Trauma Lens
  • Collaborative Classrooms and Intrinsic Motivation and Restorative Practices
  • Instilling Hope, Student Strengths and Action Plan
  • Mindfulness and Self-Compassion for Developing Calming Strategies

How Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Effect Student Learning and the Positive Strategies you can Incorporate To Improve Students’ Self Management

Based on research, including the original CDC-Kaiser Permanente ACEs Study this workshop shares the science and research that lead to the awareness of the negative effects adverse childhood experiences have on health and learning and how we can move forward. The focus is now on the interplay between ACEs and “resilience research” through trauma-informed, resilience-building practices that can heal the brain, considered “plastic” with evidence-based practices that enhance life skills, executive function and self-regulation.

  • What are ACE’s and the impact on a child’s developing brain, learning and behavior
  • The three dimensions of executive function  - working memory, self-regulation and cognitive flexibility
  • Activities and resources will be shared to improve students’ executive functions for self-regulation, managing information, making decisions and to plan ahead with activities that support and strengthen executive function in children
